JR East Unveils Autonomous Train's Test Run

JR East Unveils Autonomous Train's Test Run

Tokyo, Jan. 7 (Jiji Press)--East Japan Railway Co. <9020>, or JR East, unveiled to the media on Monday a test run of an 11-car train using the Automatic Train Operation system on its Yamanote loop line in central Tokyo.
The test run was intended for staff members to check the acceleration and deceleration as well as the ride comfort of the self-driving train of the E235 series with the aim of achieving its practical use.
It was the third such test conducted on the Yamanote line, according to JR East.
At around 1:50 a.m. (4:50 p.m. Sunday GMT), after the last train ended its service on the line for the day, the test train using the ATO system left Osaki Station in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward and spent some two hours to run two laps around the 34.5-klometer loop line.
After running the first lap on time, the train made the second lap on the assumption that a delay was caused and that it has to make up for the lost time by boosting its speed.
