JICA Launches Massive Support for Indonesia Quake Recovery

JICA Launches Massive Support for Indonesia Quake Recovery

Jakarta, Jan. 10 (Jiji Press)--The Japan International Cooperation Agency said Thursday that it has started offering technical cooperation to support reconstruction of Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province, hit by a huge earthquake in September last year.
In the assistance, one of the largest operations in its history, JICA will send 54 experts there to help create hazard maps and develop city planning under a three-year resident program.
The dispatched personnel will make detailed hazard maps by analyzing the devastating tsunami and liquefaction following the earthquake, which left over 3,400 people dead or missing.
Based on these maps, they will make city development plans and design disaster-resistant public facilities and infrastructure. They will also support people who lost their jobs and help restore communities that were divided due to the disaster.
In a separate program, three Japanese municipal officials from Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, and Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, will hold seminars in afflicted areas and Jakarta next month to tell how their cities have been reconstructing themselves after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11, 2011.
