Visitors to Japan Hit Record 31.19 M. in 2018

Tokyo, Jan. 11 (Jiji Press)--The number of visitors to Japan in 2018 increased 8.7 pct from the previous year to about 31.19 million, marking a record high for the sixth consecutive year, tourism minister Keiichi Ishii said Friday.
The annual number exceeded 30 million for the first time.
The boost reflected a rise in the number of visitors from areas, including China, the United States, Europe and Australia, partly thanks to increased flight services by budget airlines.
Speaking at a press conference, Ishii said that the annual number may achieve the government's goal of 40 million in 2020, when the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will be held.
The number of visitors to the country fell for the first time in 68 months in September following a series of natural disasters after sharp growth earlier in 2018.
