Police Seek No Charges against Ex-Nihon Univ. Football Coaches

Tokyo, Feb. 5 (Jiji Press)--Japanese police did not seek indictments against former Nihon University coach Masato Uchida and former assistant coach Tsutomu Inoue on Tuesday over a dirty late hit during an American football game in Tokyo in May last year.
In documents sent to prosecutors, Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department concluded that Uchida, 63, and Inoue, 30, did not order a Nihon University defensive player to inflict injury on an opposing quarterback.
The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office is unlikely to indict the two former coaches, who have faced criminal complaints over the late hit that injured the Kwansei Gakuin University quarterback, sources familiar with the matter said.
In their documents, the police accused the Nihon University player of assault. Prosecutors are expected to carefully consider the case, given that the players' sides have reached an out-of-court settlement, the sources said.
During the May 6 game in Chofu, western Tokyo, the Kwansei Gakuin quarterback was hit by the Nihon University player after throwing the ball, suffering injuries to his lower back and knees, which took four weeks to recover. The injured player's side filed criminal complaints against Uchida and Inoue.
