Japanese Minister Admits Opposition-Claimed Wage Falls

Japanese Minister Admits Opposition-Claimed Wage Falls

Tokyo, Feb. 5 (Jiji Press)--Labor minister Takumi Nemoto on Tuesday admitted that opposition parties were correct to claim that price-adjusted real wages in Japan actually fell in most months of 2018.
The opposition claim is based on real wage figures for January-November from opposition parties' own calculations, following recent revelations of related survey misconduct at the labor ministry.
"What you said is right, as long as (real wages are) calculated automatically," Nemoto said at a meeting of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, in response to a question from Chinami Nishimura of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.
The minister still claimed that the opposition's calculations used a relatively small number of samples and should be reviewed by related experts.
The opposition camp is now expected to step up its allegations that the government-claimed positive effects of Abenomics, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's reflationary policy mix, are fabrications.
