LDP Mulling Bill to Empower Prefectures to Accelerate Treatment Tank Upgrade

LDP Mulling Bill to Empower Prefectures to Accelerate Treatment Tank Upgrade

Tokyo, Feb. 9 (Jiji Press)--Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party plans to draw up a bill aimed at promoting the switching from old-type wastewater treatment tanks to new ones, it was learned Saturday.
The bill to revise the sewage system act is expected to call for granting prefectural governments authority to recommend or order the installation of so-called combined-type treatment tanks, the new type, in place of old-type single treatment tanks.
The LDP will work out details of the bill, aiming to have it enacted during the ongoing parliamentary session.
During Japan's high-growth period after the end of World War II, single treatment tanks rapidly spread across the country for the purpose of introducing flush toilets.
The tanks have been cited as a reason for river water pollution, however, because they cannot treat wastewater from sources other than toilets. The combined treatment tanks can treat wastewater from kitchens and baths, in addition to that from toilets.
