Ex-Osaka Deputy Governor to Run in Gubernatorial Election

Ex-Osaka Deputy Governor to Run in Gubernatorial Election

Osaka, March 11 (Jiji Press)--Tadakazu Konishi, former deputy governor of Osaka Prefecture, said Monday he has decided to run in the upcoming gubernatorial election in the western Japan prefecture at the request of the Liberal Democratic Party.
At a press conference, Konishi criticized Osaka Governor Ichiro Matsui and Osaka Mayor Hirofumi Yoshimura for tendering their resignations to hold gubernatorial and mayoral elections simultaneously to break the current impasse in the prefectural and city assemblies over their initiative to make Osaka a metropolis as powerful as Tokyo.
Matsui is bidding to become Osaka Mayor and Yoshimura Osaka governor.
"They are making light of public positions," Konishi said.
Konishi will run in the governor's race as an independent candidate backed by the LDP, the ruling party in the national politics. He will also seek support from Komeito, the LDP's coalition partner.
