Japan Jan. Core Machinery Orders Down 5.4 Pct

   Tokyo, March 13 (Jiji Press)--Japan's seasonally adjusted core machinery orders in January fell 5.4 pct from the previous month, the Cabinet Office said Wednesday.
   Private-sector orders excluding those for ships and power equipment, closely watched as a leading indicator of corporate capital spending, came to 822.3 billion yen.
   The January result, which followed a 0.3 pct decrease in December, compared with the median estimate of a 1.6 pct decline by 17 economic research institutes surveyed by Jiji Press. Their estimates ranged from a fall of 3.0 pct to a rise of 1.7 pct.
