Japan Household Spending Up 2.1 Pct in March

Tokyo, May 10 (Jiji Press)--Japanese household spending in March rose 2.1 pct from a year earlier in price-adjusted real terms, up for the fourth consecutive month, the internal affairs ministry said Friday.
The rise was brought about by increased communications costs due to wider use of smartphones and brisk travel reservations ahead of the 10-day break from late April, ministry officials said.
Consumption expenditures by households with at least two members averaged 309,274 yen.
The ministry kept its basic assessment of household spending, saying it is picking up.
The March expenditures featured boosted air and rail tickets booking for trips during the extended Golden Week holiday period.
