Abe Sees No Prospects Yet for Summit with N. Korea's Kim

Tokyo, May 19 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe admitted Sunday that he has no prospects yet for holding a summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and signaled his readiness to work tenaciously to achieve such a meeting.
At a convention in Tokyo on the issue of Japanese national abducted by North Korea decades ago, Abe reiterated his eagerness to hold talks with Kim with no preconditions. "I want to meet with Kim Jong Un without conditions and hold candid, open-minded talks," he said.
But Abe said, "Regrettably, it's true that we don't have a clear idea when a summit meeting between Japan and North Korea can be held."
Abe stressed his policy of attaching weight to collaboration with U.S. President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to pay a visit to Japan from Saturday.
He then said, "I'm determined to engage directly with Kim in order to break the shell of mutual distrust between Japan and North Korea."
