Japan Govt Paper Calls for Cut in Renewable Energy Costs

Tokyo, June 7 (Jiji Press)--A Japanese government white paper on Friday called for cuts in costs levied on consumers to promote power generation from renewable energy sources.
The government aims to make renewable energy Japan's main power source to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction targets set in accordance with the Paris Agreement, an international framework to combat global warming.
Costs of electricity generation using renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, in Japan are "higher than international levels," said the annual report on energy, adopted at a cabinet meeting.
It is necessary to lower feed-in tariffs, or prices paid to renewable energy producers, to decrease the additional fees to cover the tariffs imposed on electricity users, the report added.
The report also said the government will promote stable growth of such power producers.
