Motegi, Lighthizer Likely to Hold Trade Talks on Thurs.

Tokyo, June 7 (Jiji Press)--Japanese economic revitalization minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Friday that he is arranging to hold trade negotiations with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in Washington on Thursday.
They are expected to exchange views on tariff reductions and elimination for agricultural items including beef, as well as for automobiles and other industrial products.
Before the ministerial meeting, the Japanese and U.S. governments are expected to hold a working-level meeting to exchange data on current export volumes of and tax rates for agricultural and industrial products and sort out issues.
"We have agreed to make efforts to narrow gaps in the positions of Japan and the United States," Motegi told a news conference. "We aim to reach an agreement that would be beneficial to both sides."
The United States is urging Japan to open its agricultural markets further at an early date, while Japan is calling for scrapping or lowering U.S. auto tariffs.
