Tokyo Expressway Tolls May Go Up 1,000 Yen during 2020 Games

Tokyo, June 7 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese and Tokyo metropolitan governments have started making arrangements to introduce a congestion surcharge of 1,000 yen for Metropolitan Expressway tolls during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, it was learned Friday.
From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., the 1,000-yen fee is planned to be tacked on the existing tolls of 300-1,000 yen for private cars using the expressway's Central Circular Route or inner sections in central Tokyo, where traffic is expected to increase during the Games with vehicles heading for competition venues, according to informed sources.
Between midnight and 4 a.m., tolls for all cars using the electronic toll collection system are expected to be halved for all sections of the expressway. The tolls will likely be kept unchanged for the remaining nonpeak periods.
The variable pricing is intended to curb the use of private cars during the day, with the aim of realizing smooth traffic flows for Olympics- and Paralympics-related vehicles.
Trucks and other service vehicles are expected to be excluded from the surcharge plan.
