Ruling LDP Vows to Revise Japanese Constitution Early

Tokyo, June 7 (Jiji Press)--Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party released on Friday its policy promises for the election in summer for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of parliament, vowing to amend the country's constitution at an early date.
"Japan's diplomacy will lead the world" for resolving such global issues as trade and environmental protection, the party also said in the campaign package.
Meanwhile, it stopped short of including in the package the planned consumption tax increase to 10 pct in October from the current 8 pct.
The package comprises six pillars, including constitutional amendment, diplomacy and national security, and economy.
"I am resolved to carve out the country's new era, Reiwa, with the public," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, also president of the LDP, said in the preamble. Reiwa started on May 1, in line with the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito on the day.
