Japan Ministry to Launch Team for Prisoners' Social Rehabilitation

Japan Ministry to Launch Team for Prisoners' Social Rehabilitation

Tokyo, June 10 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Justice Ministry plans to establish within this month a team to consider new ways to run prisons and juvenile prisons, in an effort to promote public understanding of the correctional facilities and make it easier for inmates to reenter society after they leave the facilities.
The project team is expected to submit an interim report by the end of March 2020, after fleshing out three proposals for improving the facilities, sources familiar with the matter said.
One of the ideas is to hire former inmates to serve food at dining facilities that use agricultural products grown at correctional facilities.
Another plan calls for holding "prison festival" events, where citizens can try meals prisoners eat and experience work they do.
The third initiative is for hiring juvenile inmates to do light work such as walking dogs and gardening, according to the sources.
