Empress Emerita Michiko Diagnosed with Heart Problem

Tokyo, June 11 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Empress Emerita Michiko has been diagnosed with moderate tricuspid regurgitation and arrhythmia in a recent heart test, the Imperial Household Agency said Monday.
She will not take any treatment for these conditions for the time being, but will receive monitoring through regular checkups, according to the agency.
The Empress Emerita and her husband, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, will visit the western city of Kyoto for three days starting Tuesday, as scheduled, the agency said.
In the tricuspid regurgitation, part of blood flows back between a right atrium and a right ventricle as a tricuspid valve does not close completely when a heart contracts, possibly leading to symptoms of arrhythmia, the agency said.
The Empress Emerita often gets out of breath easily after taking a walk, a symptom that started to become evident earlier this year. She underwent the heart examination on Saturday.
