Japan Eyes 300,000 Jobs for "Employment Ice Age" Generation

Tokyo, June 11 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government on Tuesday unveiled a target of creating 300,000 regular jobs over three years for people in their 30s and 40s hit by the so-called employment ice age.
A draft of the government's basic economic and fiscal policy guidelines, including intensive assistance measures for the generation, was presented at a meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, chaired by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The draft also proposed discussions to scrap a system to reduce or suspend pension payments to aged people with a fixed income. This is aimed at keeping such people motivated to work and increasing the number of those supporting the social security system.
The government hopes to realize stable economic growth by stabilizing the country's employment and improving income levels, according to the draft. The guidelines are expected to be adopted later this month.
How to support the ice age generation "is a key issue that affects the future of our country," Abe said. "It's important not only to draw up measures but also to implement them."
