Japan Producer Prices Up 0.7 Pct in May

Tokyo, June 12 (Jiji Press)--Japan's producer price index for May rose 0.7 pct from a year before to 101.8 against 100 for the base year of 2015, up for the 29th consecutive month, the Bank of Japan said in a preliminary report Wednesday.
But the tempo of growth slowed from 1.3 pct in April, due mainly to declines in prices of copper and other items reflecting concerns over escalating U.S.-China trade tensions.
Month on month, the index was down 0.1 pct, posting the first drop in four months.
Prices of pulp and paper rose 5.6 pct year on year thanks to increasing demand for cardboard boxes used for the delivery of products bought in online shopping.
Utility prices rose by 6.1 pct, and food and beverage prices by 1.4 pct.
