INTERVIEW: Shinsei Bank May Invest in Embattled Suruga Bank

Tokyo, June 13 (Jiji Press)--Shinsei Bank <8303> President Hideyuki Kudo has said the bank will consider buying an equity stake in troubled regional lender Suruga Bank <8358>.
Suruga Bank in May announced business tie-up agreements with Shinsei Bank and electronics retailer Nojima Corp. <7419>, after incurring heavy losses in fiscal 2018 over its fraudulent lending for real estate investment. Nojima holds a 4.99 pct stake in Suruga Bank.
"That will depend on whether Suruga Bank sees a need for a capital tie-up," Kudo said in a recent interview.
Such a deal will be considered "with heart and soul" if Suruga Bank asks for it, he added.
Under its current agreement, Shinsei Bank is considering working with Suruga Bank in housing loan business and credit guarantee operations for unsecured loans.
