(Update 2) Iran to Respond Severely if Attacked: Rouhani

Tehran, June 12 (Jiji Press)--Iran does not seek war with the United States, but it will make a severe response if attacked, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said after a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday.
At a joint news conference after the meeting in Tehran, Rouhani said the cause of the region's tensions is U.S. economic war, adding that stability will be restored if the economic war ends.
In response, Abe called on Iran to ease tensions with the United States. A military clash "must be avoided at all costs," he said.
"It is essential for Iran to play a constructive role in ensuring the peace and stability of the Middle East," Abe said.
Abe is visiting Iran to help ease tensions between the United States and the Middle East country. He is the first sitting Japanese prime minister visiting Iran since a trip by Takeo Fukuda in 1978, the year before the Iranian Revolution.
