Japan to Make Plastic Bag Charges Mandatory from Next April

Karuizawa, Nagano Pref., June 15 (Jiji Press)--Japan will make it mandatory to charge for disposable plastic shopping bags as early as April next year, industry minister Hiroshige Seko said Saturday.
This is the first time that the government has indicated a specific schedule for the initiative.
Seko made the remark at the opening of a two-day meeting of the Group of 20 energy and environment ministers in Karuizawa in the central prefecture of Nagano.
Japan aims to work out a G-20 agreement on an international framework to reduce marine plastic waste.
At the end of May, the government adopted a plastic resources circulation strategy including the mandatory charging for plastic shopping bags.
