Use of Facial Recognition Systems with AI Spreading

   Tokyo, June 17 (Jiji Press)--Facial recognition systems using artificial intelligence are growing in use, enabling people to pay for purchases and pass airport immigration identification checks simply by having their faces scanned.
   The trend is being led by China, where settlement services using facial recognition systems have been introduced.
   Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has launched the Smile to Pay service, which allows payment with face scanning. The service has been adopted at over 300 outlets of U.S. fried chicken chain KFC Corp. in China.
   Among Japanese companies, NEC Corp.'s <6701> facial recognition technology is to be used at Narita International Airport near Tokyo. It will also be used at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics to verify the identity of participating athletes and officials when they enter competition venues and other facilities.
   New services capitalizing on facial recognition technology have also been launched in Japan. In such a service, AI provides makeup tips to customers.
