U.S to Help Resolve Japan-S. Korea Dispute: U.S. Official

Seoul, July 17 (Jiji Press)--The U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs said Wednesday that Washington will do its utmost to help Tokyo and Seoul settle their wrangling over trade.
After meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha in Seoul, David Stilwell told reporters that the United States "places great priority on strengthening" U.S.-Japan-South Korea relations.
"The truth is no significant issue in this region can be resolved without cooperation between our two allies Korea and Japan," he said.
Referring to the issue of Tokyo's tightened controls on exports of semiconductor materials to South Korea drawing severe backlash from Seoul, Stilwell then said, "The United States, as a close friend and ally to both, will do what we can to support their efforts to resolve it."
But he quickly added that "fundamentally the ROK (South Korea) and Japan must resolve" the matter on their own.
