Japan Logs Trade Surplus of 589.5 B. Yen in June

   Tokyo, July 18 (Jiji Press)--Japan logged a customs-cleared trade surplus of 589.5 billion yen in June, down 19.0 pct from a year before, the Ministry of Finance said Thursday.
   The surplus came against the median forecast of 417 billion yen among the 18 research institutes surveyed by Jiji Press.
   Exports fell 6.7 pct to 6,584.5 billion yen, and imports dropped 5.2 pct to 5,995 billion yen, the ministry said in a preliminary report.
   In trade with the United States, Japan's surplus expanded 13.5 pct to 669.9 billion yen. Exports were up 4.8 pct, while imports were down 2.5 pct.
   In trade with mainland China, Japan posted a deficit of 131.3 billion yen, up 91.2 pct. Exports sagged 10.1 pct, and imports were down 5.3 pct.
