(Update) 33 Confirmed Dead in Suspected Arson Attack on Kyoto Anime Studio

   Kyoto, July 18 (Jiji Press)--An animation studio in the western Japan city of Kyoto caught fire after an explosion in a suspected arson attack on Thursday, leaving 33 people dead and many others injured, according to police and other sources.
   The Kyoto prefectural police department said that 35 of the 75 people who were believed to have been in the No. 1 studio of Kyoto Animation Co. at the time of the explosion and fire were injured and sent to hospital, while seven were confirmed safe. Of the 35 injured people, 16 were hospitalized, with at least one of them unconscious.
   Of the 33 dead victims, two were found on the first floor of the studio, 11 on the second floor and 20 on the third floor and staircases to the rooftop. Twelve of them were men and 20 women, while the gender of the remaining victim is yet to be confirmed.
   The Kyoto fire department received an emergency call around 10:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. GMT) reporting that the animation studio in the city's Fushimi Ward was on fire following the sound of a blast on the first floor of the three-story building.
   The police detained a 41-year-old man, who is suspected to have set fire to the studio, some 100 meters away from the facility. He told the police at the time that he set fire after releasing a liquid. The department is investigating the man for alleged arson and murder.
