Wage, Bonus Hikes for Japan Govt Employees Recommended for 6th Year

Wage, Bonus Hikes for Japan Govt Employees Recommended for 6th Year

Tokyo, Aug. 7 (Jiji Press)--Japan's National Personnel Authority advised the cabinet and parliament on Wednesday to raise national government employees' monthly salaries and bonuses for the sixth consecutive year in fiscal 2019, which started in April.
The government agency called for raising monthly salaries by 387 yen, or 0.09 pct, on average and annual bonuses by 0.05 month of salary to 4.50 months.
If the recommendations are fully implemented, government officials are expected to see their annual pay increase by 27,000 yen on average. The move is likely to affect local government workers' pay.
The raises are necessary to close the pay gap between government employees and private-sector workers, the agency said.
The proposed monthly salary increase, however, is smaller than the rise of 655 yen, or 0.16 pct, recommended for fiscal 2018, reflecting a slowdown in private-sector wage hikes.
