KyoAni Studio Building Filled with Smoke in 30 Seconds: Study

Kyoto, Aug. 7 (Jiji Press)--A Kyoto Animation Co. studio building was filled with smoke in only 30 seconds after an arsonist started a fire on the building's first floor on July 18, a Kyoto University study showed Wednesday.
The results of a simulation by Tomoaki Nishino, associate professor at the university's Disaster Prevention Institute, were in line with a survivor's report that black smoke filled the space soon after the noise of a blast.
The large amount of smoke is believed to have made it difficult for people in the building at the time to evacuate.
The arson attack killed 35 people and injured 33 others excluding suspect Shinji Aoba, 41, who was also severely wounded and hospitalized after allegedly igniting gasoline he poured on the first floor. The Kyoto prefectural police department is waiting for his recovery to serve an arrest warrant on him for murder and other charges.
According to the study, smoke reached the third floor through spiral stairs in five seconds and spread across the floor in 15 seconds, including around an exit to the roof from separate stairs.
