Man Arrested for Making Threat over Statue in Aichi Event

Nagoya, Aug. 8 (Jiji Press)--The Aichi prefectural police have arrested a local man for making a threat demanding the removal of a controversial statue exhibited in an international art festival in the central Japan prefecture.
Shuji Hotta, 59, of Inazawa, Aichi, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of obstruction of business by force. Hotta, a corporate employee, has admitted to the allegations, according to investigative sources.
Hotta allegedly sent a fax threatening to visit the venue of the Aichi Triennale 2019 festival where the girl statue symbolizing wartime comfort women was displayed, in order to set fire with gasoline.
The fax, sent on Friday from a convenience store in the prefecture to the Aichi Arts Center, the key venue of the festival, led to the closure of a special exhibit that displayed the statue.
Comfort women, including Koreans, were forced to provide sex to Japanese troops during wartime. Wartime issues remain a sensitive topic between Japan and South Korea, whose relations are slumping.
