Employment Rate for New University Grads in Japan Rises for 9th Year

Tokyo, Aug. 8 (Jiji Press)--The employment rate for new university graduates in Japan this year rose 0.9 percentage point from the previous year to 78.0 pct, marking its ninth straight year of increase, the education ministry said Thursday.
"The proportion of new university graduates getting jobs is increasing on the back of the persistently high job opening-to-application ratio," a ministry official said.
Of 572,640 people who graduated from university in spring this year, 446,887 got jobs, according to the ministry.
Of them, 430,964 people got regular jobs, accounting for 75.3 pct of all graduates, up 1.2 points. Nonregular employees, such as contract workers, made up 2.8 pct, down 0.2 point, and part-time workers accounted for 1.4 pct, down 0.1 point.
The proportion of graduates who entered graduate schools or other educational institutions fell 0.4 point to 11.4 pct. Those who did not proceed to such institutions or get jobs made up 6.7 pct, down 0.3 point.
