Japan Tourist Biz Hit by Tensions with South Korea

Tokyo, Aug. 21 (Jiji Press)--Tensions between Tokyo and Seoul are casting a shadow over the tourist business in Japan, as the number of visitors from South Korea is shrinking.
Concerns are mounting about the long-term effect on the industry of the increasing number of travel cancellations and suspensions of flights by South Korean airlines.
The number of South Korean passengers on high-speed ferries between southwestern Japan's Fukuoka and South Korea's Busan decreased by about 70 pct year on year during Japan's summer holiday period between Aug. 9 and Sunday.
The ferry's operator, JR Kyushu Jet Ferry Inc., has been getting an increasing number of cancellations since Japan started tightening controls on exports to South Korea in July.
South Korean low-cost carrier T'way Air recently decided to suspend some regular flights connecting South Korea with Japanese airports in the Kyushu southwestern region and Sapporo, northernmost Japan with little prospects for a recovery in travel demand.
