Tokyo, Sept. 8 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Empress Emerita Michiko underwent a successful surgery to remove cancer in her left breast on Sunday.
The operation, conducted at the University of Tokyo Hospital, ended in about four hours.
The former Empress, 84, was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer, with no signs of cancer metastasis. She is expected to leave the hospital in several days.
She entered an operating room at 10 a.m. (1 a.m. GMT) to receive the surgery under general anesthesia and returned to her hospital room soon after 2 p.m. The operation was conducted jointly by a doctor from the Shizuoka Cancer Center who has carried out heath checkups for her for more than 10 years and a doctor from the university hospital.
According to the Imperial Household Agency, the cancer was about one centimeter in size and a 5-centimeter circular lump was removed in a breast conservation surgery. An examination during the operation found no metastasis to lymph nodes.
