One Year On, Japan Still Struggling to Contain Swine Fever

Tokyo, Sept. 10 (Jiji Press)--Japan remains in an uphill battle to contain swine fever one year after the first case of the infectious disease in the country in 26 years was confirmed on Sept. 9, 2018, in the central prefecture of Gifu.
Infections have been found at pig farms in Gifu and six other prefectures--Aichi, Nagano, Fukui, Mie, Osaka and Shiga--and a total of 130,000 pigs have been culled. Infected wild boars have also been found, in Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures in central Japan, as well as Gifu, Aichi, Nagano, Fukui and Mie.
Measures taken so far to prevent the spread of the disease have not been successful, while discussions are still ongoing on whether vaccination of pigs against the disease, a step sought by many pig farmers, should be implemented.
"I won't be able to restart my business unless vaccination is carried out," cried a farmer in Gifu, all of whose pigs were slaughtered after some of them tested positive for swine fever, also known as pig cholera.
The Gifu government has slaughtered over 60,000 pigs, more than half of farm pigs in the prefecture, in the past year. Earlier this month, however, a new case of infection was confirmed in the city of Nakatsugawa in Gifu.
