Empress Emerita to Leave Hospital on Tuesday

Tokyo, Sept. 9 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Empress Emerita Michiko, who underwent successful surgery to remove cancer in her left breast on Sunday, will be discharged from hospital on Tuesday afternoon, the Imperial Household Agency said Monday.
The 84-year-old former Empress has been doing well since the operation at the University of Tokyo Hospital, the agency said.
She has not been able to eat properly, but she is gradually regaining her appetite, the agency said. Also, she left her hospital room and walked in the hallway on Monday, it said.
Her husband, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, visited the hospital Monday afternoon for the second straight day.
Her cancer, about one centimeter in size, was removed in breast conservation surgery. She was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer, with no signs of metastasis.
