Japan to Contest South Korea's Trade Complaint

Japan to Contest South Korea's Trade Complaint

Tokyo, Sept. 11 (Jiji Press)--Japan plans to contest a South Korean trade complaint against Tokyo's tighter controls on exports of three semiconductor materials to the country, officials said.
"Japanese export control measures are consistent with World Trade Organization rules," a senior trade ministry official said after South Korea filed the complaint with the Geneva-based world trade body.
The dispute may take years to reach a final resolution as Tokyo and Seoul show no signs of working out their differences, sources familiar with the situation said.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that Tokyo "will handle the matter appropriately, based on established procedures."
Japan does not violate WTO rules at all, said Isshu Sugawara, who took up the position of trade minister as part of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday.
