Female Fans in Japan Enjoying Watching Rugby Matches

Tokyo, Oct. 4 (Jiji Press)--Japan has found that it has an unexpectedly large number of female rugby fans.
They are referred to as "ru-girl" or rugby girls, who say people will become interested in the sport when they see players engage in hard physical contact with each other.
Some of them came to know the sport well through the 2015 World Cup, in which Japanese superstar Ayumu Goromaru and other players gave outstanding performances, while others are mothers who became enthusiastic fans again after going through a busy child-rearing period.
On Sept. 12, over 30 women attended an event at a Tokyo bar, where they showed each other their nails decorated with the official mascots of the 2019 World Cup in Japan, chatted about rugby and enjoyed a lecture by a sports writer.
"After child-rearing was over, I found rugby something I could devote myself to," said Mikiko Kikuchi, a 54-year-old Tokyo corporate worker. She used to watch college rugby matches frequently when she was younger.
