Sales of Dashboard Cameras Surging in Japan

Tokyo, Oct. 7 (Jiji Press)--Sales of dashboard cameras for constantly recording traffic activities are surging in Japan, with a growing number of drivers hoping to secure evidence to resolve problems or lawsuits over accidents resulting from tailgating and other forms of dangerous driving.
The number of shipments of dashboard cameras, or event data recorders, in Japan came to 3.67 million units in fiscal 2018, 2.5 times higher than in fiscal 2016, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, made up mainly of electronic manufacturers. The increase came after more and more car accidents stemming from malicious driving behaviors came under the spotlight in recent years.
Demand for driving recorders was boosted especially from a high-profile case of reckless driving and assault that occurred on the Joban Expressway in the eastern prefecture of Ibaraki on Aug. 10.
"In August, some stores recorded a threefold sales rise from July," an official of an automotive supplies store said.
Devices with two cameras for recording images in high quality through front and rear windows, as well as those that can monitor in 360 degrees with limited blind spots are gaining traction. Products priced in the range of 20,000 yen to 40,000 yen are selling well.
