Japan Eyes Registration System for Regional Revitalization with SDGs

Japan Eyes Registration System for Regional Revitalization with SDGs

Tokyo, Oct. 7 (Jiji Press)--The Cabinet Office will set up a system to register and certify private companies engaging in activities that are in line with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to regional revitalization, it was learned Monday.
To phase in the system, starting in fiscal 2020, the central government agency is studying its design with local governments with advanced approaches to the SDGs, which include eradicating poverty, achieving gender equality and ensuring access to affordable, clean energy, officials said.
The agency hopes to let more people know about the SDGs for regional revitalization by making regional companies' activities visible to outsiders, they said.
The envisioned system would allow companies to register their efforts on the SDGs by filing applications with local governments. The agency plans to make this available to a wide variety of private business operators, ranging from the regional offices of big companies to the self-employed, so that many will register.
The agency plans to certify registered operators after they satisfy certain criteria, such as passing a screening by a third-party organization, the officials said.
