Japan Household Spending Up 1.0 Pct in Aug.

Tokyo, Oct. 8 (Jiji Press)--The average spending by households in Japan with two or more members rose 1.0 pct in August from a year earlier to 296,327 yen in inflation-adjusted real terms, the internal affairs ministry said Tuesday.
Consumption grew for the ninth straight month, supported by strong sales of products, including air conditioners, as hot days continued in August.
The ministry kept unchanged its basic view that household spending is "picking up."
Last-minute demand ahead of the consumption tax hike from 8 pct to 10 pct in October was not pronounced, an official said.
Travel services drew strong demand on the back of fine weather. Automobiles enjoyed solid sales, chiefly minivehicles, with engine displacements up to 660 cc.
