JAL Given 2nd Biz Improvement Order over Pilot Drinking

Tokyo, Oct. 8 (Jiji Press)--Japan's transport ministry issued a second business improvement order to Japan Airlines <9201> under the civil aeronautics law on Tuesday over a series of drinking incidents involving its pilots.
JAL became the first major carrier to be ordered twice to improve its operations over the same issue.
The ministry summoned JAL President Yuji Akasaka to issue the order, referring to the possibility of ordering a flight suspension as pilot replacement cases related to alcohol drinking continued occurring even after the first order was issued in December last year.
"I'm aware that the company is in a very serious and critical condition," Akasaka said. "I'm sincerely sorry."
Akasaka said he will serve as general safety manager to lead efforts to prevent any recurrence of similar drinking problems involving JAL pilots.
