Britain's V&A Museum to Hold Kimono Exhibition Next Year

Britain's V&A Museum to Hold Kimono Exhibition Next Year

London, Oct. 9 (Jiji Press)--The Victoria and Albert Museum in London said Wednesday it will hold an exhibition featuring Japanese kimono next year, the first such show to be held on a large scale in Europe.
The event, named "Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk," will run from Feb. 29 to June 21 that year at the museum, known globally for the variety of its decorative arts collections.
Bringing together more than 300 items including paintings and "ukiyoe" woodblock prints depicting women wearing kimono, it will showcase the charms of kimono, from designs that became popular in Kyoto in the Edo period (1603-1868) to kimono-inspired garments in the present-day world.
The exhibition will trace the history of Japanese kimono from the 17th century to modern times.
Also to be displayed are clothes inspired by kimono, such as loosely fitted garments in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, costumes in the U.S. popular movie series Star Wars and works by a contemporary designer from Africa combining ethnic costume and kimono.
