Govt Keeping Close Watch on Tax Hike Impact: Abe

Govt Keeping Close Watch on Tax Hike Impact: Abe

Tokyo, Oct. 10 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government will continue paying careful attention to any impact on the economy from the Oct. 1 consumption tax increase, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday.
Referring to measures aimed at alleviating the tax hike impact, such as a point reward program for cashless payments, Abe said, "The government will continue watching closely whether these measures are implemented smoothly and keep a careful watch on the (tax hike's) effects on the economy and consumption."
He made the remarks at a meeting of the Budget Committee of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of parliament.
Also at the meeting, Abe said it is important to fully implement U.N. Security Council resolutions against North Korea in urging Pyongyang to give up its nuclear and missile development programs.
Japan "will continue efforts so that the resolutions are carried out by more countries," Abe said.
