Abe May Meet with 50 World Leaders on Imperial Ceremony Sidelines

Tokyo, Oct. 11 (Jiji Press)--Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is planning to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from about 50 countries during their visits to Japan for the "Sokuirei-Seiden-no-Gi" ceremony on Oct. 22 to proclaim Emperor Naruhito's enthronement, government sources said Friday.
Abe apparently hopes to boost Japanese diplomatic power by meeting with as many foreign dignitaries as possible on the occasion of the celebratory event.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in will not attend the ceremony, amid strained ties between Tokyo and Seoul over wartime labor and other issues. Instead, Seoul is likely to be represented by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon.
A visit by Lee, seen as friendly to Japan, is the best option under the current situation between the two East Asian nations, a Japanese Foreign Ministry source said, while noting that the proclamation ceremony for former Emperor Akihito, now Emperor Emeritus, in 1990 was attended by then South Korean Prime Minister Kang Young-hoon.
Representatives of over 190 countries and international organizations are expected to come to Japan for the Imperial ceremony, and Abe is expected to hold talks with dignitaries between Oct. 21 and Oct. 25, with a break on the day of the ceremony. The marathon of meetings will be held at the State Guest House in the Motoakasaka district in Tokyo's Minato Ward.
