(Update) Japan, S. Korea Remain Apart over Export Controls at WTO Talks

Geneva, Oct. 11 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo and Seoul remained apart over Japan's tightened controls on South Korea-bound exports of semiconductor-related materials, at bilateral talks held at the World Trade Organization headquarters in Geneva on Friday.
The two sides reiterated their respective positions at the meeting, according to sources with access to the talks. Still, they agreed to continue discussions, the sources said. The talks were requested by South Korea based on WTO agreements.
Last month, South Korea filed a complaint with the WTO, claiming that the Japanese measure reflects political reasons against the background of wartime labor and other bilateral problems. Japan has rebutted by saying that the export control review conforms with WTO agreements.
From Japan, Junichiro Kuroda, director-general of the Multilateral Trade System Department of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Trade Policy Bureau, and other officials took part in Friday's talks, which lasted about six hours. South Korean representatives included Chung Hae-kwan, an official of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The next round of talks are expected to be held by early November.
"We gave a full explanation in response to questions from the South Korean side," Kuroda told reporters after the latest session.
