(Update) Abe, Li Agree to Deepen Ties ahead of Xi Visit

Bangkok, Nov. 4 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang agreed on Monday to aim for deepening their countries' relations, including economic cooperation, from a big-picture perspective, apparently having in mind an expected visit to Japan by Chinese President Xi Jinping as a state guest next spring.
At their meeting in a suburb of Bangkok, which lasted about 25 minutes, Li told Abe that the eighth summit among the two nations plus South Korea slated next month in China will be held in Chengdu, the capital of the inland province of Sichuan.
Touching on recent mutual visits by leaders of China and Japan to each other's country, Li said that the two nations' ties returned to a normal trajectory in the past year, adding that China hopes to work with Japan to protect the free trade system and multilateralism.
Also noting that this year marks 20 years after the trilateral cooperation framework among China, Japan and South Korea was launched, Li asked for Japan's support for the success of the upcoming three-way summit.
Abe expressed his readiness to cooperate, adding that Tokyo wants to make Xi's planned state visit to Japan fruitful for a new era for Japan and China.
