LDP's Seko Trying to Raise Profile in Upper House

LDP's Seko Trying to Raise Profile in Upper House

Tokyo, Nov. 11 (Jiji Press)--Hiroshige Seko, secretary-general for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in the House of Councillors, is trying to raise his profile in the upper chamber of parliament.
Seko has recently launched lawmaker groups, including a study team for Upper House LDP members on social security. He has also criticized the administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe repeatedly though he is Abe's close aide.
The moves may signal a wish to establish himself as an influential figure in the Upper House. But many observers speculate that he may switch to the House of Representatives, the all-important lower chamber, as he is gunning for the post of prime minister.
Looking back at the two months since he took up the LDP Upper House post, Seko said Friday, "I'd like to continue making steady efforts so that I can reach the levels of my great predecessor," the late Hiromi Yoshida.
The LDP once had Mikio Aoki, who was a powerful boss of the party's Upper House lawmakers for a long time. Yoshida also pulled the LDP Upper House members together to support the Abe administration.
