Descriptive Questions May Be Excluded from Second-Round Test Cutoff

Tokyo, Nov. 14 (Jiji Press)--Japan's education ministry is considering asking national and other public universities to exclude the scores of descriptive questions for the subject of Japanese in the first round of entrance examinations when setting a cutoff point for applicants wishing to take second-round tests, it has been learned.
The request will come as descriptive questions are set to be introduced for mathematics, as well as Japanese, under a new unified university entrance examination system starting in fiscal 2020.
The ministry hopes to address test-takers' possible difficulties deciding which universities they should apply due to expected gaps between the scores of their answers for descriptive questions graded by themselves and official scores.
Official test scores are not returned to test-takers until after the university entrance exam period, so prospective applicants must score their test responses by themselves to determine whether they are qualified to take second-round tests for their preferred schools.
Some universities set a cutoff point based on first-round test scores to narrow down the number of applicants to second-round tests. The discrepancies between self-graded test scores and official test scores sent to universities may result in students seeking to take second-round tests for schools to which they are not qualified to apply.
