(Update 2) Detained Japanese Professor Returns from China

Beijing, Nov. 15 (Jiji Press)--A Japanese university professor who was detained during a trip to Beijing in September has been freed and returned to Japan on Friday.
The Hokkaido University professor, Nobu Iwatani, 42, had been taken into custody by Chinese authorities on suspicion of gathering documents related to the country's state secrets in violation of the criminal and antiespionage laws, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Friday.
At a press conference in Tokyo, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga confirmed that Iwatani has returned home. The professor "has no obvious health problems," Suga said.
Iwatani, who specializes in modern Chinese history, has worked for the Japanese Foreign Ministry and the Defense Ministry's National Institute for Defense Studies.
He was detained while visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Modern History, a government think tank.
