Japan Political Parties' Total Spending Down 17 Pct in 2018

Tokyo, Nov. 29 (Jiji Press)--Total expenditures by political parties in Japan in 2018 dropped 13,443 million yen, or 17 pct, from the previous year, to 65,436 million yen, an internal affairs ministry report showed Friday.
Political parties apparently saved money in 2018, ahead of unified local elections in spring this year and the House of Councillors poll in July. Unlike the two preceding years, the reporting year had no major national elections.
Of the total, election-related spending came to 835 million yen, down sharply from 10,041 million yen in 2017, according to the report compiled on the basis of political funds statements submitted by the parties. Subsidies from party headquarters to local chapters and others dived to 16,275 million yen from 23,830 million yen.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party topped the list, spending 21,137 million yen, down 18.0 pct, followed by the opposition Japanese Communist Party, with 20,325 million yen, down 5.3 pct, and Komeito, the LDP's coalition partner, with 12,622 million yen, down 9.2 pct. The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan came fifth, with 2,538 million yen.
Meanwhile, the combined incomes of all political parties in 2018, excluding carry-over funds from the previous year, grew 3.5 pct to 77,334 million yen, with state subsidies accounting for 41.1 pct of the total, down 0.9 percentage point. Excluding the JCP, which accepted no state subsidies, the dependency rate came to 55.7 pct, down 3.0 points.
