Japan Lists Parental Physical Punishments to Be Banned

Tokyo, Dec. 3 (Jiji Press)--Japan's welfare ministry Tuesday released draft guidelines listing examples of parental physical punishments before relevant law revisions to ban such acts take effect next April.
The examples include refusing to provide meals to children for failing to do homework, ordering them to sit erect on their heels in the "seiza" formal style for a long time and giving a slap on the cheek after a warning was ignored three times, the draft said.
The draft also mentions desirable ways to treat children, saying that parents should not compare their children unfavorably with others'.
It also says parents should never tell their children, even jokingly, that they should not have been born.
This is the first time for the government to give examples of parental physical punishments.
