(Update) Ex-Worker Pleads Guilty to 2016 Deadly Care Home Attack

Yokohama, Jan. 8 (Jiji Press)--A former worker of a now-defunct care home for mentally disabled people pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday to a 2016 deadly attack at the facility in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, eastern Japan.
In the first hearing of his trial at Yokohama District Court, Satoshi Uematsu, 29, admitted to murder and other charges against him.
His defense asked the court to acquit him or reduce his sentence, claiming that he was in a state of insanity or diminished capacity during the attack at the care home, Tsukui Yamayuri-en.
The attack cost the lives of 19 residents, aged 19 to 70, and left 26 others injured, including two facility workers, in the early hours of July 26, 2016.
After he turned himself in to local police following the shocking predawn incident and was arrested, Uematsu claimed that he targeted severely disabled people, according to investigative sources.
